Forgotten Spaces Winner 2012

Our competitive proposal for an eco-driving range on the historic Dunston Staithes has been announced as the RIBA Forgotten Spaces Winner 2012. The monumental structure caught our imagination and we hope this may inspire much needed regeneration to the industrial monument.

We were delighted the structure and our intervention have been recognised in this competition. An exhibition on the shortlisted schemes is running in Newcastle’s Newgate Centre until December 14th.

Details on exhibition here

Friar House Apartment Hotel Open

Work on the conversion of the grade II town house has completed and we are pleased to announce Friar House Apartment Hotel open with guests stays now available.

The building has some unashamedly modern features and services nestled in amongst the fabulous existing retained features to make for a unique boutique city stay experience.

But don’t take out word for it, trip advisor thinks so too

Animate Space, Newcastle University;  Charrette Week 2012

MawsonKerr were invited by Newcastle University to run a Charrette, an intensive and creative week long project that involved 45 Architecture students from all years.   The designing, building and filming of the chain reaction machine took 4 days and came within our budget of £50 for materials.  The results can be seen on the link below:

Forgotten Spaces North East

Forgotten Spaces North East
Location: Dunston Staithes
Sectors: Leisure, Sustainability

The Staithes at Dunston, a listed structure, is considered to be the largest timber structure in Europe. This relic of the industrial era currently collects flotsam and is slowly decomposing in the silt of the Tyne.

Our light touch proposal is to bring this back to life as an ecological gold driving range where you can “hit some balls and feed the fish”. This is part of the Forgotten Spaces North East competition where surreal and wild ideas are pitched in a public arena discussing areas requiring regeneration.

There is a more serious debate behind the light-hearted solution; the loss of this iconic structure. We are putting our whole-hearted support behind this industrial monument and will be generating other ideas in the coming months.

Friar House Apartment Hotel On Site

Work has started at Friar House Apartment Hotel on site as the contractor’s commenced construction this week. The Grade II listed building is being fully refurbished to offer luxury city break stays with Roomzzz Aparthotels. Due for opening in late Summer Friar House is a rich part of Newcastle’s historic past and a building we have grown to know very intimately.
